Sister musical duo Chloe x Halle’s latest album and accompanying live performances from home have been thrilling new fans since its release. The sisters have been promoting their new music heavily and giving stylized, fashionable looks to boot. Along with their music, the sisters have become known for their natural hair styles, spurred on no doubt by support from their label boss, Beyoncé.

Recently, an old picture of the pair as children went viral from the girls’ early days that they seemed slightly ashamed of, though fans thought it was an adorable snapshot into their sisterly love. The picture elicited feelings of the racism and negative interactions with the industry for the sisters, however.

In the picture, the girls can be seen at the ages of 8 and 6 wearing knit hats on top of a LOT of hair for their small heads, and when the girls retweeted the picture themselves, they added “these wigs” with a few crying emojis.

In an interview with Beyoncé’s mother Tina Lawson recently, the girls addressed the photos and the relationship to their hair that it highlighted.

“We would go on auditions for these different roles and so a lot of the feedback would be, ‘Oh we like you guys but we don’t want to see the locs.’ So the solution was to, you know, get a wig to go on these auditions with,” said sister Chloe.

“We got played okay! Some lady put Troll wigs on us. She was telling us it was the right hair. ‘This is what everybody wears. This is the real deal.’ We look back at the pictures, we looked like Trolls,” said Halle.
